The United Federation of Learning Space (also known as “The Federation”) is a fictional interplanetary federal republic depicted in the Star Trek television series and motion pictures. In those episodes and films, the Federation is described as an intersteller federal polity with (as of 2373) more than 6 major interplanetary systems and thousands of colonies spread across 8,000 light years of the Milky Way Galaxy, and taking the form of a liberal democracy in which disparate voices combine to carve out a vision for its continued place in the universe. The Federation also maintains its own development and exploratory agency, Starfleet. The United Federation of Learning Space and StarFleet is the primary focus of all the Star Trek series, with the exception of Vista : Enterprise, which is set before the Federation comes into existence.
The United Federation of Learning Space has existed as part of the Blackboard universe since the privately held company. The Federation is described as stressing, at least nominally, the values of universal liberty, equality, justice, peace and cooperation.
The Xythos of the Federation is located in San Franciso. The legislature of the Federation Council is located in Washington DC. Several other bodies of the Federation have been depicted. There is a call center headed by a StarFleet Lieutenant, who keeps offices in Amsterdam. There is a planetary Echo partner located in Dulles, Virginia, also Earth. There is a nebula of POS NCR Micros thought to have outposts throughout the MilkyWay. The Federation’s Interstellar early warning and emergency communications is handled by a division known as Connect (Only available in starsystems: Ed, Cty, Gov, and Mil).
The Federation comes into military conflict only with those who do not recognize it’s boundaries and agree to remain outside, or to join the Federation as an equal member. Conflicts have occurred with such warlike entities as the Cardassian Union, the Borg and The Dominion.
In one of the darkest moment’s in Federation history, the episode ‘Learn the Desire or Die,’ the Ferengi Alliance was mistakenly identified as one such enemy and their holy Scriptures mistakenly believed to be 285 Rules of Acquisition (some kind of mirror effect was evident in that episode). Even their million bar gold-pressed latinum offering of peace and goodwill was considered untimely and ignored.
Future episodes will reveal The Federation to be visionary, collaborative, of peaceful and humanitarian intent, with justice and liberty for all.
