BbWorld: User Group Spirit Contest

The Client Appreciation Party always includes a BUG (Blackboard User Group) spirit contest. The group I belong to, VistaSWAT, which, incidentally is the only BUG we know of which is international. We meet in a Wimba Live Classroom twice a month.

Anyway, we lost out for first place to the very clever Pittsburgh BUG, who, in true Las Vegas style, brought their room’s bathrobes down and mocked a strip tease to the appropriate music. Since the contest is voted on audience applause, you can imagine the whoopla that raised.

Meanwhile the more cerebral VistaSWAT group had devised this ‘gimmick’ whereby our SWAT user group members (and many more of them participated than any other BUG) focused on ‘swatting’ our least favorite “BUGS” (purposeful double entendre there).

Our least favorite bugs included JMS Node Instability, HTML Creator, and my personally loathed, which I gladly represented for the contest:

  1. Hmmm I seem to think someone gave you a workaround that you haven’t tried yet. 😛

  2. Tried the workaround, and yes it works! And is included in SP1, although I haven’t had a chance to install SP1 yet.
BUT – “Grade Export to SIS” is so much more than a development bug. It can not be a little standalone feature that only gets attention when it isn’t limping along like it’s currently designed to do. It is part of an integration strategy. Part of a marketing strategy. Part of vendor relationships (Bb and SunGard in this case). And here at ND it is part of our overall adoption strategy, part of our vision for seamless operation between our business apps (the registration and enrollment of students and assignment of their Instructors), course management (seamless choices on the way various Section Instructors choose to collaborate, to combine or separate material, assignments and assessments)and making a way for beyond that, the cradle to grave experience of students contributing to their school (improving Programs by participating in the accreditation process), part of managing tailored resumes or portfolios of their previous work and continuing education – that depends on ID Management.
IS Blackboard prepared? Are the pieces in place? Emphatically no. How do I know this? Because Blackboard can’t demonstrate that it even understands the business processes involved in sending a grade from a course management system to the system of record for grades, that’s why!

  3. That’s the first pic I’ve seen of the bug hats and protest placards. Awesome! Next year we should make bug hats for all known issues – everyone at the conference could wear one 😉
