log4j.properties Import extract logging…

I would be interested to know how others have modified this file and/or the logging settings in the Weblogic Console. For my part, I’ve added the category definition and appender definition originally given to us by Jesse Lyman back in Sept. of 2004, when we were on Vista 3:

# —————–BEGIN LMB CATEGORY DEFINITION —————————-
# For LMB Debugging – output goes to the LMB Appender
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.systemintegrationapi=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.deployablecomponents=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.security.authentication.module=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.framework.ejb=debug,LMB
# Next can be turned off if proven ineffective. Do I see xml?
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.framework.xml=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.person.importexport=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.enrollment.importexport=debug,LMB
log4j.category.com.webct.platform.coreservice.LearningCtxt.importexport=debug,LMB
# ——————-END LMB CATEGORY DEFINITION —————————

# —————–BEGIN LMB APPENDER DEFINITION————————-

# LMB appender goes to logs/LMB.log
log4j.appender.LMB=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender

# If your domain is not ‘WebCTDomain’ then set this accordingly
log4j.appender.LMB.File=config/WebCTDomain/logs/LMB.log

# Max log file size is 5 megs
log4j.appender.LMB.MaxFileSize=5MB

# Keep up to 20 of these ‘rolled’ 5mb logs.
log4j.appender.LMB.MaxBackupIndex=20
log4j.appender.LMB.Append=true
log4j.appender.LMB.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout

#ConversionPattern rundown
# [%-5p] : prints the priority surrounded by square brackets. ‘-‘ means left justified and 5
# means five chars at most. Ie. DEBUG, WARN
# %d{DATE} : prints date format, for example “06 Nov 1994 15:49:37,459” The 459 is ‘seconds
# since start’ –I think
# %c{1} the class name. c{2} would be ‘webct’ from com.webct.FooBar c{1} would be FooBar
# %n%m%n%n : newline, then the message, then 2 more newlines
# %n%m%n%n : newline, then the message, then 2 more newlines
log4j.appender.LMB.layout.ConversionPattern=[%-5p] %d{DATE} %c{1} %n%m%n%n

# ——————-END LMB APPENDER DEFINITION —————————

I see in Vista4, there’s already an SMTP appender already defined, so I configured it and added the EMail appender to fatal conditions I want to be emailed about… I may knock that down a peg or two when I know what errors in Vista4 I need to know about quickly.
